Alta – the Town of the Northern Light

Alta is the largest town in the county of Finnmark in Northern Norway. The world's first Northern Lights observatory was built there at the end of the 19th century and it has earned Alta the name ‘the Town of the Northern Lights’.

In Alta, you can experience the northern lights during the blue season in the middle of winter (November to January), the midnight sun (May to August), Sami culture, reindeer and UNESCO-protected rock carvings dating back 2,000 to 6,200 years.
