Skien is the capital of Telemark by virtue of being the oldest and largest town and the administrative centre of the county.

Skien is located by the Telemark Canal. The canal became known as ‘the fast route’ between Eastern and Western Norway and it was also the most important transport route between upper and lower Telemark for people, domestic animals, goods and timber. Skien is the birthplace of the famous Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, and Ibsenhuset is the town's biggest cultural centre.
