Bergen-Oslo via the Hardangervidda plateau

Take a road trip from West to East in Norway

Start this tour by spending a few days in the capital of Western Norway. Bergen has many attractions, teeming crowds and plenty of restaurants and accommodation to choose from.

From Bergen, you drive across the Kvamskogen plateau to Norheimsund, where you pass the Steindalsfossen waterfall. Drive along the Hardangerfjord, Norway’s second longest fjord, to Eidfjord.

After a stop in Eidfjord, drive the steep and winding road up through the Måbødalen valley to the Hardangervidda plateau, Northern Europe’s largest high-mountain plateau and Norway’s biggest national park. We recommend a stop at Vøringsfossen, Norway’s tallest waterfall, before you drive across the Hardangevidda plateau to Geilo.

From Geilo, you continue down the Hallingdal valley to Hønefoss and on to Vikersund, which is part of Kunstnerdalen (Valley of Artists), a valley with beautiful scenery and a rich cultural scene. Visit Modum Blaafarveverk with its art exhibitions, mine safaris, museums, country store, glass shop and talks on the history of the mining community.

After a stop in Vikersund, it is not far to the last stop of this trip, Norway’s capital, Oslo. Enjoy the variety the city has to offer in terms of attractions, restaurants, shops and museums. Not to mention the pulsating life of Norway’s biggest city!

DETOURS

Explore Hardanger
From Eidfjord, we recommend you to spend a day in Hardanger to experience the charming, small villages and the magnificent scenery. If you head up into the mountains, you will come to Hardangervidda, the largest mountain plateau in Northern Europe. Two of the biggest glaciers in Norway, Hardangerjøkulen and Folgefonna, are in Hardanger. From glaciers and high mountains, the waterfalls cascade down into the Queen of the Fjords – the Hardangerfjord.

Rosendal
When in the Hardanger area, we recommend a visit to Rosendal, whose combination of majestic scenery and cultural attractions make this beautiful village on the Hardangerfjord well worth a visit.
