Take an exciting road trip in Fjord Norway!
The journey begins in Bergen, the capital of Western Norway. Drive to Voss and continue over the Vikafjellet mountains to the charming village of Vik.
From there, you drive along the fjord, passing the statue of Fridtjof the Bold, lovely orchards and beautiful fjord scenery. Take the ferry from Vangsnes across to Balestrand, whose attractions include the Sognefjord Aquarium.
From here, you can continue up the fjord to Sogndal, the regional centre of the Inner Sogn region. Sogndal is centrally located along the fjord and has a lot of tourist attractions. From Sogndal, continue along the Lusterfjord, the innermost branch of the Sognefjord. At the head of the fjord, you will find Skjolden, from where the road climbs up to Turtagrø. You can turn off the main road at Turtagrø and drive over the mountain to Øvre Årdal, south of the famous Hurrungane mountains and the Skagastølstindane peaks. Now you are not far from Årdalstangen and Lærdal, a cosy village with beautiful, well-preserved buildings.
From Lærdal, drive through the longest tunnel in Northern Europe, the Lærdal Tunnel. Once through the tunnel, you arrive in Aurland, a lovely, small village by the Sognefjord, with snow-capped mountains, narrow valleys and wild waterfalls nearby.
From Aurland, you drive along the fjord to Flåm, a tourist hub and terminal station of the Flåm Railway. From Flåm, you continue to Gudvangen, and continue up the steep hairpin bends of Stalheimskleiva, where you can enjoy the magnificent view and enjoy a bite to eat. Continue to Voss, from where you head for Bergen. Finish your trip by exploring the city of Bergen.
DETOURS
Urnes
If you have time, we recommend that you visit Urnes Stave Church, the oldest stave church in Norway, on the other side of the Lusterfjord. Urnes Stave Church is one of the most important cultural heritage sites in Norway, and it is included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List along with Bryggen (the old Hanseatic wharf) in Bergen and the mining town of Røros.
