Bergen-Trondheim

Take a road trip in Norway

This route takes you through Norway's most popular tourist areas and has many attractions! Experience Norway’s beautiful coastal landscape, the Trollstigen Road, the Geirangerfjord (included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List), the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund and many other great sights!?

The tour begins in Bergen, the gateway to the fjords. From Bergen, head north to Førde. On your way, you will pass cosy, small villages. You cross the Sognefjord – the longest fjord in Norway – on the ferry between Oppedal and Lavik.

From Førde, drive north along the scenic Jølstravatnet lake between the Sognefjord and Nordfjord. At Olden, you take a detour up the Briksdalen valley where you can see the beautiful blue ice of the mighty Briksdalsbreen glacier.

Stryn is well worth a stop, and for skiing enthusiasts we recommend a trip to Stryn Summer ski centre. From there, you head north across the Strynefjellet mountains to Norway’s most visited fjord – the Geirangerfjord – with its ‘Seven sisters’ waterfalls and many small mountain farms perched high up on the mountainside.

From Geiranger, you drive to the beautiful Art Nouveau town of Ålesund, the gateway to some of the most famous fjords and natural attractions in the world.

After Ålesund you pass the Romsdalsfjord on your way to Molde, the “Town of Roses”. The town is famous for the Molde Jazz Festival, which is held every summer, features world-class performers and attracts big crowds. If you take a detour to Åndalsnes before heading to Molde, you will also be able to see the majestic Trollheimen mountains.
The tour ends in Trondheim.

DETOURS

Nordhordland

We recommend a detour to Nordhordland to experience the coastal culture, the sea air and seagulls galore. Drive north from Bergen in the direction of the Nordhordland bridge. From Knarvik, you continue north to Lygra, where we recommend a visit to the Heathland Centre.

Old Strynefjell Road
The RV 258, Old Strynefjell Road, is one of four Norwegian National Tourist Routes. The contrasts and differences in the scenery between east and west are obvious in the Strynefjell mountains. The landscape bears the marks of events at the end of the last Ice Age – wide expanses, plain and rounded shapes in the east, and peaks, ravines and precipices in the west.

The Hjørundfjord
On the way to Ålesund, we recommend a drive along the beautiful Hjørundfjord, where you will experience some of Norway’s most breathtaking mountain and fjord scenery! From Geiranger you take the ferry to Hellesylt and drive through the Norangsdalen valley to Leknes. From Leknes, you take the ferry to Sæbø, drive to Ørsta and on to Festøy, where a ferry awaits you. The ferry from Festøy takes you to Solevågen, from where you can drive to Ålesund.
