Take a road trip in the Southern Norway from Oslo to Stavanger
This tour starts in Oslo and takes you via Drammen to the old silver-mining town of Kongsberg. The town's history is tied to silver mining, and the actual silver mines are located seven kilometres from the town centre. Today, the smelting works in the town centre house the Norwegian Mining Museum.
From Kongsberg, you follow the main road, which takes you into the Mid-Telemark region, where Norway’s history as a skiing nation started with Sondre Norheim, a native of the Morgedal valley. On your way through Telemark, you will pass beautiful farms and scenic areas, where both walks and bicycle trips are recommended.
The tour continues over the Haukelifjell mountains to Røldal, where you turn off to Suldal, driving through Ryfylke to Sand, a beautiful village beside the Boknafjord near Suldalslågen, Western Norway’s longest river system.
On the way to Sandnes, you pass the Lysefjord where the Pulpit Rock plateau (Preikestolen) is located. If you take a detour up the fjord, you will also see the famous Mount Kjerag. Arriving in Sandnes, you will find Kongeparken amusement park with lots of fun for the whole family.
The last stop on the tour is the oil city of Stavanger, with its charming wooden houses and pulsating city life.
DETOURS
Kongsberg - Rjukan - Rauland
From Kongsberg, we recommend a detour on the RV 37 road to Gaustatoppen, one of the best viewpoints in Norway, with an unhindered view towards the Jotunheimen mountains in the north, Nordmarka in the east, the sea between Kragerø and the Swedish coast in the south-east, and the Hardangervidda mountain plateau in the west. Rjukan, with its dramatic war-time and industrial history, lies 15 kilometres to the south. Continuing on the RV 37, you pass Rauland, where you have many kilometres of marked paths to choose from, or you can go horse-riding, take a cycling trip, fish in a clear mountain lake or hunt small game.
Setesdalen
Turn off at Haukeligrend and continue down the Setesdalen valley. The landscape varies from low-lying villages to wild and beautiful high mountains. The road through the valley passes through the villages of Hovden, Bykle and Evje. You can enjoy leisurely days bathing or active days rafting the roaring river rapids. You can enjoy a walk in the beautiful landscape or visit some of the valley's many attractions.
