Stavanger - Oslo via Telemark

Take a road trip from West to East Norway

This tour starts in the oil city of Stavanger with its charming wooden houses and pulsating city life.

From Stavanger, you drive to Sandnes, then pass the Lysefjord where the Pulpit Rock plateau is located. If you make a detour up the fjord, you will also see the famous Mount Kjerag. Arriving in Sandnes, you will find Kongeparken amusement park, which has a lot of fun activities for the whole family.

The tour continues to Suldal and Sand in Ryfylke, a beautiful village beside the Boknafjord near Suldalslågen, Western Norway’s longest river system.

From Sand you drive to Røldal and across the Haukelifjell mountains into Mid-Telemark, the region where Norway’s history as a skiing nation started with Sondre Norheim, a native of the Morgedal valley. On your way through Telemark, you will pass beautiful farms and scenic areas, where walks and bicycle trips are recommended.

Then drive to the old town of Kongsberg. The town's history is tied to silver mining. Today, the smelting works in the town centre house the Norwegian Mining Museum.

From Kongsberg, it is not far to Drammen, from where you drive the last stretch to Oslo, the capital of Norway.

DETOURS

Kongsberg - Rjukan - Rauland
From Kongsberg, we recommend a detour on the RV 37 road to Gaustatoppen, one of the best viewpoints in Norway, with an unhindered view towards the Jotunheimen mountains in the north, Nordmarka in the east, the sea between Kragerø and the Swedish coast in the south-east, and the Hardangervidda mountain plateau in the west. Rjukan, with its dramatic war-time and industrial history, lies 15 kilometres to the south. Continuing on the RV 37, you pass Rauland, where you have many kilometres of marked paths to choose from, or you can go horse-riding, take a cycling trip, fish in a clear mountain lake or hunt small game.

Setesdalen
Turn off at Haukeligrend and continue down the Setesdalen valley. The landscape varies from low-lying villages to wild and beautiful high mountains.  The road through the valley passes through the villages of Hovden, Bykle and Evje. You can enjoy leisurely days bathing or active days of rafting the roaring river rapids. Enjoy a walk in the beautiful landscape or visit some of the valley's many attractions.
