The Rallarvegen is the most popular cycling trip in Norway and guaranteed to be an experience you will never forget! This cycling adventure can be started in Oslo, Bergen or Geilo and you can customize the trip to include a mesmerizing fjord cruise or a trip with the scenic Flåm Railway.
From you starting destination you travel by train to Finse. Here you disembark the train, pick up your bikes and start your scenic cycling adventure towards Flåm. The trip can be completed in one day, but note that we highly recommend that you add overnight stays along the route!
Rallarvegen Original Tour
On the Rallarvegen Original Tour you travel as described above all the way to Flåm. From Flåm you travel on the scenic Flåm Railway to Myrdal and back to your starting destination by train. This tour can be taken as a day trip, but some of the variations requires overnight stays along the route.
Rallarvegen with Fjord Cruise
On the Rallarvegen with Fjord Cruise you travel as described above all the way to Flåm, where an overnight stay is required. From Flåm you continue by taking a fjord cruise to Gudvangen on the amazing UNESCO-protected Nærøyfjorden. From Gudvangen you travel by bus to Voss (via the Stalheimskleiva road) and continue by train to your final destination.
About Rallarvegen (the Navvies' Road):
As the name suggests the Rallarvegen road dates back to the time when the road was used by navvies during the construction of the Bergen Railway. Today Rallarvegen is best known as a cycle route of exceptional beauty, offering a multitude of experiences.
In Finse, at an altitude of 1,222 metres, you can pay a visit to Rallarmuseet, the navvies’ museum, where you can discover how navvies lived and the tools and aids they used in the construction of the Bergen Railway. From Finse to the end point in Flåm the distance is about 53 km.
Rallarvegen route & stops
Finse - Hallingskeid, 21 kilometers
The bike ride from Finse to Hallingskeid (1110 meters above sea level) goes downward through a wide-open mountain landscape, with great views of the Hardangerjøkulen glacier to the west. A popular stop during this leg is the signalman's cabin, Fagernut Vokterbolig, about half way between Finse and Hallingskeid. The house, dated 1904, is the highest of its kind in Norway at 1,310 metres. There you will find a café and an exhibition about life as a signalman high up in the mountains.
Hallingskeid to Vatnahalsen, 15 kilometers
The section from Hallingskeid to Vatnahalsen (812 meters above sea level) is for many the most spectacular leg of the Rallarvegen. The bike trail goes along a mountain ledge, with steep slopes and wild, thundering waterfalls.
Vatnahalsen - Flåm, 17 kilometers
From Vatnahalsen you continue downhill through the beautiful Flåmsdalen valley to Flåm and the Aurlandsfjord. When you arrive at Flåm you leave your rental bikes at Flåm Station. They bikes will be returned to the bike rental company, this is included in the package.
