Getting to Myrdal

By train
Myrdal is easily reached via the Bergen Railway. The journey from Bergen takes about 2 hours, passing through tunnels and across bridges as the landscape grows increasingly dramatic. From Oslo, the trip takes around 4.5 hours, crossing the spectacular Hardangervidda mountain plateau—Norway’s largest national park—before descending toward Myrdal.

Rallarvegen - The navvies' road This historic 82-kilometer cycling and hiking route follows the path workers used building the Bergen Railway, stretching from Haugastøl to Flåm via Myrdal.
Flåm Railway viewpoints The hour-long journey features photo stops at scenic viewpoints, including Kjosfossen waterfall - a 225-meter cascade where the train pauses for passengers to disembark and explore.
Hiking trails from Myrdal There are several marked trails with start from Myrdal station of different fitness level. In winter, the area becomes cross-country skiing terrain. Check local conditions and avalanche warnings before winter excursions.

Travel tips and seasonal insights

Best time to visit

Summer (June–August): The most reliable weather and longest days. The Flåm Railway runs often, trails are snow-free, and all facilities are open.
Autumn (September–October): Fewer crowds and beautiful autumn colors, though weather becomes less predictable with possible snow at higher elevations.
Winter (November–April): Myrdal turns into a snowy landscape. The Bergen Railway operates year-round, but trails are snow-covered and require proper winter gear.

Weather Preparation

At 867 meters, weather can change quickly. Expect temperatures 10–15°C cooler than at sea level, even in summer. Bring warm layers, a wind- and waterproof jacket, sturdy footwear, sun protection, and snacks and water for hikes.
