Things to do in Ålesund
Ålesund sits on a cluster of islands at the edge of the Norwegian Sea, where the mountains meet the Atlantic.
It's one of Norway's most distinctive cities: rebuilt in Art Nouveau style after a fire in 1904, and today known as a gateway to the Geirangerfjord.

Popular day tours from Ålesund
Ålesund is close to some of Norway's most spectacular fjords. The UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord is within easy reach, and the Atlantic coastline stretches in both directions.
Below are the day tours our team recommends most, each one chosen for what it delivers, not just where it goes.
Fjord cruise to the Geirangerfjord
Perfect for: First-time visitors to the fjords.
Sail from Ålesund into the heart of the Geirangerfjord. Spot the Seven Sisters waterfall, the Suitor, and the tall mountain walls that rise over a thousand meters from the water.
The Geirangerfjord is one of the most celebrated fjords in the world, and we believe that seeing it from the water is the only way to feel how impressive it actually is.
Trollstigen and Geirangerfjord round trip
Perfect for: Travelers who want both the fjord and the mountains in a single day, without the driving stress.
This tour gives you the full picture of Western Norway in one day. You leave Ålesund, cruise the Geirangerfjord, and return via the mountain road Trollstigen.
Coastal safari by RIB
Perfect for: Wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone who wants to see the Atlantic coast up close.
Head out along the open coastline west of Ålesund. A RIB boat takes you at speed through skerries and sea, with chances to spot sea eagles, seals, and puffins that nest along the Atlantic shore.
Visit Ålesund on a multi-day tour
Ålesund fits naturally into multi-day routes going to the Geirangerfjord. If you'd rather not plan connections yourself, these tours include Ålesund as part of a complete, pre-booked itinerary. Combine the Geirangefjord, scenic railways, and mountain scenery into one journey.

Travel information about Ålesund
Essential information to help you plan your visit to Ålesund, from transportation options to seasonal considerations.
Best time to visit Ålesund
June to August is the peak season, with the best weather, the longest daylight hours, and the full range of activities running. The Geirangerfjord tours and outdoor activities are all at their most accessible.
May and September are great alternatives if you’re after a quiet city center but still beautiful conditions.
Winter brings out a slow, moodier side of the city, with snow on the mountains and the blue light over the fjords. Some seasonal activities pause during this period.
Getting to Ålesund
Ålesund has its own airport (Ålesund Airport, Vigra) with direct connections to Oslo and several other Norwegian cities. Airport buses connect the airport to the city center in 25 minutes.
By car from Bergen, the drive takes around 6 hours, depending on the route and ferry crossings. There are also express boat connections from Bergen and along the western fjord coast.
Getting around in Ålesund
The city center is small and walkable. The Art Nouveau architecture, the harbor, and the steps up to Aksla viewpoint are all within easy reach on foot.
Ålesund is not connected to Norway’s train network, but local buses operate throughout town and the surrounding areas.
Where to stay
Ålesund has plenty of accommodation options. Here are some of our favorites:
- Hotel Brosundet is a 4-star boutique hotel by the harbor
- Quality Hotel Waterfront is a 4-star modern city center hotel
- Thon Hotel Ålesund is a more affordable option
Tip! Book ahead for summer travel, because Ålesund is popular in July and August, and the best accommodations fill up quickly.
When to book your tour
For summer visits between June and August, we recommend booking 3 to 6 weeks in advance for day tours, and even more in advance if you're combining Ålesund with a multi-day itinerary. The Geirangerfjord cruises can sell out on popular dates.
Outside peak season, more last-minute availability is usually possible, but booking ahead gives you a better chance of securing your preferred dates and departure times.
