Can I combine this tour with Norway in a Nutshell®?

Yes, this tour can be easily combined for a complete round trip through Norway’s fjord highlights. The UNESCO Geirangerfjord in a Nutshell™ Winter tour runs from Bergen or Ålesund to Oslo, while the Norway in a Nutshell® tour covers the Oslo to Bergen route. Together, they create a perfect round trip between Oslo and Bergen (or vice versa).

What alternative travel options are available if the Geirangerfjord freezes?

This is quite a beautiful sight, but when it happens, an alternative itinerary is provided. This includes a scenic combination of boat and bus travel, allowing you to still experience the region’s major sights and cultural highlights.

What to wear in Norway in winter?

To enjoy the beautiful outdoors in Norway’s winter wonderland, here are some good tips: Layering is key! Wear wool or thermal base layer, a good warm sweater and a waterproof and windproof outer layer/jacket Warm hat, scarf, gloves, and wool socks are recommended Wear waterproof winter boots with good grip, possibly snow spikes. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen for sunny winter days!

How cold does it get in the Norwegian Fjords in winter?

Winter temperatures in the Norwegian fjords vary according to location:  Coastal areas, such as Bergen and Ålesund, typically stay around 0°C (32°F) Inland and mountain fjord regions can be much colder, often dropping to -10°C (14°F) or even lower during cold spells The weather in winter can change rapidly – between snow, rain, sun and gusty winds, sometimes within the same day. Make sure to dress warm; the right clothing means you’ll stay warm and be able to enjoy every moment outdoors, whatever the weather brings.

Which meals are included, and what Norwegian food will we get to try?

Included in the tour is a light lunch with coffee/ tea on the Geirangerfjord cruise.	Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available - just let us know when booking.	You'll also have opportunities to purchase meals during the tour.  Ålesund has excellent restaurants serving fresh local seafood, which we recommend trying	during your overnight stay.

Are the trains and boats heated/comfortable in winter?

All transportation on the tour is designed for winter comfort. The Rauma and Dovre railway cars are modern and fully heated with large panoramic windows for viewing the snowy landscapes. The Geirangerfjord cruise boat has heated indoor viewing areas with comfortable seating where you can warm up between trips to the outdoor deck.Dress in layers so you can adjust throughout the day.

Can we see the Northern Lights on this tour?

Accepted Answer

The Northern Lights are possible in Western-Norway during winter, but we can't guarantee sightings. The Geirangerfjord region sits at the southern edge of the aurora zone, so sightings are less frequent than in northern Norway. Your best chances are on clear, dark nights in December and January. However, this tour focuses on spectacular fjord scenery, frozen waterfalls, and scenic train journeys rather than aurora hunting. If Northern Lights are your main priority, we recommend our tours further north where sightings are more reliable.
