  • Via Myrdal on the Bergen–Oslo line. The Flåm Railway takes you directly to the village in about an hour.

  • Scenic drive via Aurland, or from Bergen in approximately 2,5 hours

  • Fjord ferry routes connect Flåm to nearby villages and the Sognefjord

Many people arrive by train or ferry and continue onward. This combination of a fjord cruise over the Sognefjord to Flåm and the Flåm Railway forms the Sognefjord in a Nutshell™ route.

Getting around Flåm

Flåm is small. The entire village is walkable in 10 minutes. For nearby attractions:
  • Rental bikes: Available from April to October, perfect for exploring the Rallarvegen route.
  • Guided tours are the easier option for Stegastein, Borgund, and other sites.
  • Taxis are limited and must be booked well in advance, especially in the summer months.

Best time to visit Flåm

  • June to August: Peak season, best weather, all summer activities running, longest daylight hours.
  • May and September: Fewer crowds, still beautiful. Some activities have reduced schedules.
  • Winter: Quiet, snowy landscapes and a different atmosphere mean you may want to plan your time around the winter light - for example, as on our winter Flåm round-trip tour from Bergen.

  • Flåmsbrygga Hotel: Traditional timber hotel right on the fjord with an on-site brewery.
  • Fretheim Hotel: Historic elegance with beautiful gardens and views of the surrounding mountains.

For summer travel, we recommend booking 4–6 months ahead. Flåm is a small village with limited accommodation.

How to plan your time in Flåm

How long do you need?

If you're doing Norway in a Nutshell® or Sognefjord in a Nutshell™, the Flåm Railway and fjord cruise are already built into one continuous, bookable itinerary.
Are you exploring independently? Keep in mind that return journeys add time: the railway goes back the same way, and the fjord cruise is one-way with a bus back to Flåm. Factor that in when planning your day.
  • Half a day: Pick one highlight: the Flåm Railway or a fjord cruise.
  • Full day: Combine the railway and fjord cruise with a visit to Stegastein.
  • 2 days: Add a hike, a kayaking tour, or a visit to Borgund Stave Church.
  • 3+ days gives you time to enjoy everything at a relaxed pace, with time to simply wander the village and surroundings.

One-day itinerary Flåm example

  • Morning: Flåm Railway. The journey takes 55 minutes each way.
  • Midday: Lunch in the village, for example, at Ægir Brewery.
  • Afternoon: Stegastein viewpoint bus tour
  • Late afternoon: Fjord cruise to Gudvangen to continue your trip

Combine the must-dos of Flåm in one trip

The Flåm Railway and a Nærøyfjord cruise are the 2 non-negotiables. If you want both in a seamless itinerary without coordinating connections, the Norway in a Nutshell® tour covers both.
