What to do in Flåm

The Flåm Railway

It's impossible to talk about things to do in Flåm without mentioning the Flåm Railway. Described by many as the most beautiful train journey in the world, this 20-kilometer-long train ride between Myrdal and Flåm provides some of the country’s wildest and most awe inspiring scenery. The twisting tunnels that spiral in and out of the mountain bear witness to the most daring and skilled engineering in Norwegian railway history and is truly a sight to behold.

Fjord Cruises

There are loads of different options for fjord cruises in Flåm and most cruises operate all year. On a fjord cruise you mainly travel by RIB-boat and get to experience the spectacular nature and fjord landscape of this World Heritage Area.

During a fjord cruise you might even see seals, porpoises and eagles. Your guide will tell you about the fjord, local history and the wildlife, as well as sharing stories, tales and legends, from various places of interest. Some fjord cruises also offer cheese tasting or a Viking Dinner!

Stegastein Viewpoint

About half an hour from Flåm, you will find the lofty viewing point of Stegastein. Here you can feel the wind beneath your wings while getting a great view of the beautiful Aurlandsfjord! If you have a car, you can easily drive here, but a great option for getting to Stegastein from Flåm is by joining the Electric Minibus Running between Flåm city centre and Stegastein Viewpont.

Kayaking

If you are spending a few hours in Flåm, a kayaking trip is a great option! On a kayaking adventure you will get a personal and up close experience of the peaceful fjord landscape. The kayaking trips requires no previous experience and a guide will be with you at all times. There are several different options available in Flåm, for example this three hour kayaking trip.

Hiking

Hiking is very popular in Norway and there are few places that offers better trails and hiking experiences than the Aurlandsfjorden region. From Flåm there are several different options for hiking tours and one of the most popular hikes is the Brekkefossen Hike. This hike is about 5 kilometers long and the total elevation is about 155 meters. The Brekkefossen waterfall is a spectacular sight, little village of Flåm will be visible through the trees and the hike offers beautiful birds eye views of the area.

There is also an option for hiking to the Leim Goat Farm. This hike also includes lunch and a fjord cruise into the heart of the Nærøyfjord with the magnificent Sagfoss as a turning point. In the Aurlandsfjord, the RIB-boat stops by the pier in Skjerdal and you start a guided hike up to the goat farm Leim. At the goat farm you will get an introduction to the production of goat cheese and lunch is served on the terrace with cheese tasting and a main course based on locally grown produce.
