Travel can be a life changing experience – especially if you’ve been tipped off for a fantastic destination that not that many people know about. If you are looking for unique experiences and destinations, look no further than Norway. From being close to nature to getting an adrenaline rush, the country has many once-in-a-lifetime experiences that will satisfy the appetite of any traveller. Check out our list of some of the most unique places to stay if you decide to visit Norway!

Vatnahalsen Hotel

At the top of Flåmsdalen valley overlooking the Aurlandsfjord, you’ll find Vatnahalsen Hotel. It’s located just a stone’s throw away from the Flåm Railway, so getting there is easy. At this hotel, you’ll find a peaceful and quiet spot embedded in stunning scenery. It’s the perfect place for anyone seeking an adrenaline rush adventure, or for those who just want to relax and take in the beauty of the surrounding landscapes.

There are plenty of unique experiences here, and Vatnahalsen is a perfect base for exploring the surrounding area. The area is home to the longest and wildest zipline in all the Nordic countries, and there’s also the option of booking a cruise on the Aurlandsfjord just below the hotel. In the winter months, you can ski all the way down to the valley, then take Flåmsbana back up to the hotel. If you’re taking on our Norway in a Nutshell® tour, you’ll be able to stop overnight here and experience the best parts of this stunning area.

Glamping at Trolltunga

“What’s glamping?”, you may be wondering. Glamping is where the beauty of nature meets modern luxury, providing you with a luxurious outdoor camping experience. It is a way to fully experience the natural surroundings without sacrificing comfort and a good night’s rest. On our Glamping trip to Trolltunga, you can take on the hike to the scenic hotspot Trolltunga and spend the night there in a comfortable dome, where you’ll also be treated to a delicious dinner. The domes are usually located off the main hiking trail, which makes for a quiet and somewhat private “off the beaten track” experience.

Watching the sunset behind the Folgefonna glacier in the distance is one of the most magical experiences to be had while glamping at Trolltunga. The next morning, you can watch the sunrise and look forward to a delicious breakfast – the perfect way to start any day. This glamping experience is especially perfect for a couple looking for a luxurious romantic nature getaway paired with a little bit of adventure.

Reine Rorbuer in Lofoten

In the western part of Lofoten, at the mouth of Reinefjord, lies the fishing village of Reine, where the majestic Lofoten peaks and the Arctic Ocean is the next-door neighbors. A "rorbu" is a traditional fishing cabin, and several of the rorbus in Northern Norway has been transformed into unique accommodations for travelers seeking something special.

The cabins in Reine are all newly restored and combine the atmosphere of their old use as fishermen's dwellings with modern comfort. All 'Rorbuer' have their own bathroom and nearly all have a fully equipped kitchen for those who want to prepare their own freshly caught fish. You can stay in Reine during the Legendary Lofoten tour.

An alternative rorbu experience in Lofoten is Eliassen Rorbuer, situated on the tiny island of Hamnøy by the spectacular Reinefjord. Here you can experience spectacular nature, silence, the Midnight Sun and Northern Lights, and gaze out upon the breaking sea - the genuine Lofoten atmosphere.

Skåla

Skåla is one of the highest and most unique places to stay in Norway. Perched 1848 meters above a sidearm to the stunning Nordfjord, the Skåla Mountain boasts a round stone tower with 22 rooms that was built in 1891. For years, this tower has been a popular destination for many travelers and enthusiastic hikers from all over the world. Getting to this unique spot involves a 5-hour hike to the top of the mountain and Loen is a great place to start. While you are here, also check out the amazing Loen Skylift!

The journey to the top is long, but the reward is worth it! At the top of the mountain, you’ll be greeted with magnificent views of the fjord and the surrounding mountains. Cabins have been built nearby, but you should be aware that the tower and cabins are self-service, so you’ll need to bring everything you need with you on your hike.

Hotel Brosundet

Hotel Brosundet is a fascinating design hotel located right by the sea in the city of Ålesund, one of the most beautiful cities in Norway. The unique cantilevered design of the cabins overlooks the Vanylvs fjord and gives the feeling of floating above the water. Due to the design, if you are lucky enough, you can actually catch fish in the fjord right from your cabin window! If you would like an even more unique experience during your stay in charming Ålesund, you can stay in the room located in the Molja Lighthouse at Ålesund Harbour and watch as the many boats and ships pass by this historic port.
