The Norwegian Museum of Travel and Tourism
Have you ever wondered how the first tourists got around this rugged country? Why did they come to Norway? What kind of accommodations and food were they offered?
The museum presents the history of Norwegian tourism from the 19th century until today. It follows the tracks of the first travelers – the explorers, the salmon anglers and the artists, who in their wake inspired the development of attractive tourist destinations countrywide.
A special architecture
This spectacular new museum building opened in the spring of 2016. The building is carved out of the solid underlying rock, creating a wonderful symphony of natural stone and light, which makes it an attraction in itself.
The exhibitions are designed to correspond with the architecture, and feature the use of digital technology. Visitors of all ages may use the interactive screens as they wish – searching back and forth.
Four short films
The museum has an auditorium where visitors may choose movies freely any time during opening hours. Comfortable seats and a wide screen provides an opportunity for a welcoming pause.
A quayside environment
The Norwegian Museum of Travel and Tourism is situated in the center of picturesque Balestrand, on the quayside together with 3 antique buildings.
The museum café offers snacks and freshly baked goods in a tranquil atmosphere with wonderful view to the fjord and surrounding mountains.
