Røros now and then
What really made Røros what it is today is the mining industry, wich started in 1644 when the first copper was collected from the mountains. At this point few people lived in the area. Some of the people that tried to live here previous to the mining adventure var the Sami people. Today over 20 sami families still live her, most of them keeping Reindeers as a business.
Røros is today almost like a live museum! The city center with it`s authentical wooden stuctures is saved and many bulidings are protected. The inhabitants of Røros still work and live in these typical bulidings from the 17th and 18th century.
At Røros one may explore narrow streets, old courtyards and buildings. You will find several charming shops and workshops on the many narrow streets. The place is known for it`s artists and craftsmen and many price winning products are produced her.
Food and drink
The selection of food in Røros is versatile and varied due to the vicinity of the mountains, plateaus, woods and lakes. The people here eager to create and value the resources available, and the food in Røros is a good as it is varied. You might have heard of «Rørosmat» and the label «Røros – mat fra Røros traktene», which is food from the Røros area. This is one of Norway's clearest brands in local food. Restaurants and cafés abound in Røros, and with different concepts available, it is easy to enjoy a good meal in a pleasant setting.

Røros winter market with it`s long traditions is arranged each year. The only rights to do trading belonged to Røros copper industry from 1644 – 1854, and the consecquence of this was a black market of trading. The inhabitants in this region was in need of grain, stockfish, meat, herring, butter, cheese, tobacco, hops, liquor and horses, as well as tools, gunpowder, iron, leather and ropes.
A royal resolution from 1853 states the following: "From 1854, a market will be held in Røros where it begins on the penultimate Tuesday in February and lasts until the following Friday." The market has existed and lives on at best today as a winter and Christmas market with concerts, sales events and fun.
Climate
Røros is situated inland and that results in great differences between summer and winter temperatures. During the year the precipitation is minor and and it can get very cold in the winter! The coldest temperature registred in Røros was as cold as 50,3° degrees. On the other hand in the summer it can get very warm and the warmest measuring showed 30,7°.
Remember to check the the weather report before travelling to Røros. A generic advice if you visit during winter: dress warmly!
What to see and do in Røros
There is a lot to see and do in Røros as well as places to spend the night. The city facinates all ages and just wandering around in the evening can be magical and facinating. In winter time the selection of activities such as dog sledding, ice fishing, reindeer experiences, snowmobile safaris is especially good. During summer the region offers fantastic hiking trips in the mountains and activities like biking, kayaking and much more.
