The gateway to the Arctic
Tromsø is called the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’ because it is enjoys more Northern Lights than anywhere else in the world and the city has two months of Midnight Sun.
Tromsø is the largest city north of the Arctic Circle in the Nordic countries and it is famous for the Northern Lights, the Midnight Sun, Polar Nights, the Arctic Cathedral and the University of Tromsø.
The Midnight Sun is visible from approx. 21 May to approx. 21 July. Between 21 November and 21 January, the sun disappears below the horizon and there are Polar Nights. It is possible to see the Northern Lights between August and May, but it must be dark and clear weather. Some visitors prefer to see the performance from a mountain top shielded from the city’s lights, while others are just as impressed right in the city centre.
